To celebrate the 400th anniversary of the naming of America the United State Catholic Historical Society published this book containing: a facsimile of the 1507 edition of the Cosmographiae Introductio in Latin (which includes the Four Voyages of Amerigo Vespucci translated into Latin); the two works mentioned above translated into English; a 14x26" fold-out facsimile of the Universalis Cosmographia, which was the first map to show the American continent as separate from Asia and to use the word "America"; a facsimile of the Waldseemuller globe; and an introduction written by the scholars who in 1901 discovered the only extant copy of the Universalis Cosmographia from which the facsimile is made. Also includes a photographic plate frontispiece of the Cathedral of St. Die where Waldseemuller did his cartography. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
